What is Bitcoin Halving?
Every time the Bitcoin blockchain produces 210,000 blocks, the block rewards are halved. This halving occurs approximately every four years. The fourth Bitcoin halving is expected to take place on April 23, 2024, at block height 840,000.
After each halving, the block rewards for Bitcoin decrease. Starting from an initial reward of 50 BTC per block, the current block reward is 6.25 BTC, which will further reduce to 3.125 BTC during the 2024 halving event.
As each halving systematically reduces the rate at which Bitcoin is generated, it leads to a significant impact on the price of Bitcoin. The halving cycle occurs roughly every four years, and 2024 marks the fourth halving cycle. Historical evidence has shown that Bitcoin halving acts as a crucial catalyst propelling Bitcoin into a new bull market. The first three halvings have led to substantial increases in the price of BTC, as detailed in the table below.
The Bitcoin halving event in 2024 is expected to kickstart the next major bull market. Additionally, the approval of a Bitcoin spot ETF in the US will further fuel the arrival of the Bitcoin bull market. Bitcoin is poised to become the most prominent asset this year.
